after watching the first season over again, one of the most heartbreaking moments has to be when Joan's roomate comes out to her and tells her that she is in love with her. "think of me as a man, joan." there is no more eloquent way of depicting the plight of a gay person before stonewall and the seventies than that statement of delusion and desperation.

SO GOOD.

This is a comic that i've started inspired by the song "blind" by Hercules and Love Affair, featuring Antony Hegarty. I get a very particular feeling from listening to that song and it has proven invaluable as a cure to my insomnia, counter intuitive as that is, since its a dance track. Evan pointed out that the text is really incongruous to the images, and he is entirely right and i'm thinking of what to do...but i'm very proud so far. see the moon man?

Butoh is an experimental form of japanese dance which is an amalgam of traditional japanese dance, classical european forms, and freestyle. i would love to see a performance, its incredible, and the images, even just stills are so beautiful. i was turned onto it because antony's recent album art features Kazuo ohno, a legendary butoh dancer. my ideal scenario right now is to hole up in a big pitch-dark room with a projector and ball up on a couch and watch hours of butoh films and eat cucumbers and drink iced tea.

I have found my passion. Spring weight jackets. I've read that people tend to buy the same five articles of clothing over and over again. I can't seem to own enough of em (spring weight jackets)! I found one that walks perfectly the line between masculine and feminine, classic and modern. THATS MY LINE. Also I think the ruching on the back makes it look a little like the wearer is actually shedding his human clothing because he is a monster in man clothes. The second most purchased thing for me is things that resemble monsters.

Its by a Japanese brand called "Creep." Carried by Urban Outfitters...

I also really want a good pair of summer dock-siders. The variations on this theme seem endless.

I was on a battle ship and it was pitch black outside, the ocean was dark, and we were at war, it was the Austrians vs the Japanese. I don't know which i was, I must have been Austrian. I remember being in a hidden passage under a stairway in the bowels of the ship and the room was stuffed to the brim with porcelain pugs and porcelain courtiers with parasols and porcelain babies. My mother was there, I was a child in this dream and she asked, "why are all the sculptures in here?" and I responded. "so they don't get broken by the bombs." Everything in the dream was lit by dim lamps. There were weird scenes where we were battling with distant lights from the Japanese ships across a span of water but the 'bombs' looked a lot like fireworks. The deck of the ship kept dipping into the water and it would spill over the rails, which was terrifying. Everybody was dressed in Victorian clothing, or sort of Edwardian, and then some important head of state was coming aboard and we all had to pretend that we were not at war so all the best decorations got put out, and everything looked like versailles, and it was all chandelierrey and I was with a maid who was being very clingy and I looked over this balcony in the ship's ballroom and my mom was all alone on this couch in the center of the ballroom below us and i told the maid I had to go help my mom convince the colonel that we were not at war, that she couldn't do that alone.

DREAMS, I always always dream about water, I was on a steam-boat in a dream from a week ago, and its often pitch black...darker than it ever is naturally, spooky...I feel like this might be me missing true darkness or true night because the minneapolis sky at night is always that damned purple color.

GOT ME HOPING

I saw Antony and the Johnsons perform this past Saturday, the fourteenth. They played the Pantages theatre. It was really great, a sophisticated crowd, lots of tweed. The lighting was strange, it would 'swell' sorta. For the first half of the set, I'd say it never rose above candlelight, but then as he progressed to their more ballad like selections it would rise and you could actually see him. It made me laugh a little because it was so mysterious and it seemed a little 'elephant man is coming turn the lights down low...' They played everything I wanted to hear with the exception of "Hope Mountain." The Beyonce "Crazy in Love" cover made it. I was pleased.

He was completely charming and eccentric. For long periods after some of the songs he would silently stare off in space and stroke the piano. Oh and he would intermittently snap his fingers really close to his face while singing, like someone coaxing spirits.

I also discovered that Antony Hegarty does some visual work. Its very much complimentary to his music, and makes me think I could somewhat faithfully record my dreams visually. Something to work towards.

I dreamed last night of strange things.

I was accosted and beaten by a group of men for no reason, they left me for dead in an intersection, all around it was pitch-black, like the intersection was under a stark white street lamp. A lone person, a faceless stranger approached me from nowhere and I explained to her that I had just been beaten and she motioned for me to watch the darkness. From the darkness comes a man dressed in glitter and a torn white dress, his legs were bare and exposed through the shredded fabric. There was a huge pot-hole in the intersection and he stuffed it with red roses, huge gorgeous red rose blossoms. The man went back into the darkness and was gone but a moment. He returned on a bicycle and he was comically veering and teetering and he went into the pot-hole and the bike flipped him onto his face and he bit the black, wet concrete with tremendous force and his black page boy wig came off. when he slammed into the road a puff of curly smoke went up from the impact and when he got up, mostly toothless and black, like he was made of ash and his face was smoking in a really comedic, screwball sort of way. the skin was pulled away from his eyes so that you could see the deep red of the flesh underneath. Though he was ashen and disfigured, his makeup remained perfect, purple and blue eye shadow and red red red lips. The ash man straightened himself up and began to walk towards me with these exposed eyeballs of his.

I don't remember anything after that. The color was vivid in this dream and felt important. I recall the dream with a sense that it was hilarious.

ULTIMA THULE

I found these glasses a while ago at Savers, and I thought they looked like this set I'd seen in a book on sixties design. I bought them because they look like they are carved out of ice, and I liked that idea. I just found out that they are those glasses, and I just broke one and I feel like I killed it. Tapio Wirkkala is the designer, Finnish if you can imagine. "Ultima Thule" is the set and I'm obsessed now with getting every piece.

NOTHING SPECIAL

I watched Flesh, the Paul Morrissey film recently and I loved it. I think more movies should be like that, like Morrissey's movies. Incredible lives and situations to be sure, but presented like its nothing special, really touching maybe, or sad or hilarious. Nothing special though. No schmaltz hustling. The scene with Candy and Jackie and that girl who wanted breast implants was spectacular.

A Candy Darling Documentary coming out soon is titled, "Beautiful Darling." It looks marvelous.
